For decades, Indian modular kitchens and wardrobes have been built using plywood or MDF boards. While these materials are reasonably strong, they suffer from a major structural weakness: moisture absorption. In tropical regions, moisture levels often exceed 80%, resulting in rising dampness through walls. When plywood absorbs this moisture, it swells, delaminates, and becomes a breeding ground for black mold and termites. Today, architects are rapidly transitioning to high-density PVC and WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) Foam Boards as performance substrates.
Understanding the Polymer Core (The 0.55g/cm³ Density Standard)
It is critical to distinguish premium APD PVC Foam Boards from cheap lightweight boards sold in standard market stalls. Cheap boards have low density (under 0.40g/cm³), making them soft, easily crushed, and unable to hold cabinet screws. APD maintains a strict 0.55g/cm³ to 0.60g/cm³ density calibration. The closed-cell polymer structure provides excellent compression resistance, high screw-holding power, and an exceptionally smooth surface, making them fully compatible with hinges, laminates, and acrylic finishes.
The Waterproof Backing Shield behind Premium Louvers
One of the most important applications of a 6mm APD PVC Foam Board is as a protective wall backing. When installing high-end PS wall panels or charcoal louvers on brick walls, moisture from structural brickwork will slowly penetrate wood frames and degrade adhesives. By fastening a thin sheet of high-density PVC board to the brick wall first, you create a permanent, non-degradable polymer shield. This ensures the decorative panels stay flat, dry, and secure for their entire lifespan, regardless of active rising dampness.
Termite Resistance and Fire Retardancy
Since WPC/PVC foam boards contain no organic cellulose fibers, they are completely immune to wood-borer insects and subterranean termites. Additionally, APD foam boards contain specialized fire-inhibitor resins, achieving Class A flame retardancy. If exposed to a direct flame, they will self-extinguish immediately without generating toxic black smoke or propagating fire, offering valuable safety margins for residential modular kitchens.
